Online Information – Review Info

  • Deleting something you post does NOT mean it’s gone forever.

  • Other people can save, screenshot, copy, or share your posts.

  • Websites and apps may keep their own copies even if you delete something.

  • Even if you ask others to delete it, they don’t have to.

  • Closing your account doesn’t guarantee your info is erased — some sites keep data for a long time (check the Terms of Service).

  • It’s hard to control info collected about you because:

    • Sites collect data from your activity, not just what you post
    • You may not know it’s being tracked

Bottom line: Once something is online, you lose control over it.

Explains:

  • What information the site collects about you

  • How they collect it (posts, clicks, searches, location, etc.)

  • Who they share it with (like advertisers)

  • What choices you have to limit sharing

  • What happens to your data if you close your account

  • What you can do if they break their own rules

Terms of Use (Terms of Service)

Explains: The rules for using the website or app

  • What behaviour is allowed or not allowed

  • Who owns the content you post

  • How to close your account

  • What happens if rules are broken

Name one piece of information that you give away with each of those activities.

Think about how you use the internet and social media. Write about how your online activities and the things you share might affect your future. Consider the following questions:

  1. What kind of digital footprint are you creating? Are there things you post or share that you might regret later?

  2. How can you make sure your online presence helps you rather than harms you, especially in terms of school, work, or personal reputation?

  3. What steps can you take to protect your personal information and privacy online?
